Street Food Vendor Caught Washing Oranges With Omo Detergent In Lagos - Video Goes Viral
Nigerians are in shock after a viral video captured a street food vendor washing oranges with Omo detergent before selling them to customers in Lagos.
The disturbing video which was shared on TikTok by Gist With Adeolaa has sparked outrage online, with many Nigerians questioning the safety of street food.
In the video, the man identified as an orange seller could be seen inside a bucket of soapy water. He was using Omo detergent to wash his oranges vigorously, rinsing them and then arranging them neatly for sale to unsuspecting customers.
The video caption read "He Dey use Omo Dey wash orange" and immediately went viral on TikTok and Instagram.
Many viewers were disgusted. One commenter wrote "So na so we dey chop chemical for Lagos? God abeg." Another said "This is why I always wash my fruits with salt water when I get home."
Health experts have warned that washing fruits with detergent like Omo is extremely dangerous. Detergents contain chemicals that are not safe for consumption and can cause stomach problems, food poisoning, and other health issues.
"This is very risky," a Lagos-based food safety expert told Gist With Adeolaa. "Omo contains surfactants and chemicals meant for clothes, not for food. If ingested, it can cause vomiting, diarrhea and long term health complications."
This is not the first time street vendors in Lagos have been caught using unsafe methods to make their fruits look fresher and more attractive.
Last year, a similar video of a woman using carbide to ripen plantain went viral.
The Lagos State Food Safety Agency has been tagged in the video and Nigerians are calling for proper monitoring of street food vendors.
As of the time of filing this report, the orange seller in the video is yet to be identified.
What do you think? Have you ever seen this before? Would you still buy street orange after seeing this video?
